beautyHaving fun and relaxing is something that I have always loved to do ever since I was a little girl. I remember being a little girl and not really being that much of a girly girl. I did find myself loving natural things and how they interacted on the body. From making my own handmade beauty products like facial masks out of oatmeal and honey, to revitalizing hair concoctions out of egg and mayo.

When I was little girl these ordeals were a little messy, I always had fun doing them and experimenting  just to see the end results. My family and younger cousins were always wanting some sort of new at home spa treatment for themselves.

I did a pretty good job if could say so myself. (Whipped right out my own kitchen)

Reminiscing on some of these old thoughts had me thinking how you would be able to re-create your own at home spa feel. By learning how to decorate your own bathroom or even your room for that spa experience.

When I was younger I did not have all these things but I did try my hardest to make the surroundings as relaxing as possible.

Here are some my tips to help you re-create certain elements of an at home spa:

First You need to start with a pristine bathroom. Clear away clutter and make room of relaxation. It is impossible to relax in the midst of excess.

Purchase the necessary spa products required for ultimate relaxation. Select a small water-proof inflatable pillow and a body puff. Splurge on thick, indulgent towels.

Emphasize purity by only using natural, organic bath and body products. Surround yourself in all natural products and heavenly scents. Scents are known to enhance the effect of an at home spa allowing your body and mind to relax more.

Remember It's all about setting the scene, allowing the mind the chance to escape.

Choose organic, all natural scents that match the season or your mood. Change the scents frequently to refresh the impact. As said before all scents trigger different effects, lavender, and frankincense are good choices.

Add calming music by piping in instrumental music or by purchasing a small CD player for the bathroom. Have a small selection of music that relaxes you and enhances the atmosphere once again. I for one am a big fan of Asian spa music, something about the chords is amazing.  Relaxing orient is one of my favorites.

Make your own sachet bags by purchasing small organza bags from the wedding aisle at craft stores and filling them with dried flowers, soap slivers, herbs and botanicals or cotton balls infused with aromatherapy oils. Tuck the handmade sachet bags in drawers, in closets and in nooks and crannies around the bathroom for a long-lasting fragrance.

Scent the steaming bath water with an infusion of organic bath oils, sea salts and dried flowers. Let it seep for several minutes before lounging in the perfumed water.

Surround the space around the tub with a selection of all-natural candles. Light several for a relaxing light show, a whisper of scent and a calming glow.

Surround the space around the tub with a selection of all-natural candles. Light several for a relaxing light show, a whisper of scent and a calming glow.

Use natural loofah, sea salts and Shea butter to slough off dead skin from your knees, elbows and feet. Then follow by rinsing thoroughly and massage with all natural butters for silky smooth skin.

Mist yourself frequently with a cool infusion of distilled water and essential oils for a unique, personal aromatherapy that you can take anywhere.

Make your own travel spa by collecting and rinsing out thoroughly the small, travel size bottles and refilling them with organic, all natural shampoo, lotion and body wash. Take a bath puff, an extra candle or two and a plush washcloth for a complete spa experience.

Arrange different size bottles in the corner of the tub to display your bath products. Collect unusually shaped bottles for displaying your organic bath and body supplies.

Practical can still be beautiful.

Cleanse your face with organic skin care products. Rest assured that you are using only the finest eco-friendly and natural products to remove dirt, pollution, oil and impurities from your skin. There should be no chemical residue or excessive drying found with commercial products.

After washing with natural shampoo, drench your hair in an organic deep conditioner and wrap in a towel turban. Soak in the tub while your hair soaks in the nutrients and rinse when you are done. Your hair will feel silky and smooth.

Display organic soaps in alarge glass container or jar on your bathroom counter.

Slather on all natural butters after your long bubble bath has warmed and tendered your skin. It will absorb easily and smoothly, leaving your skin soft and supple.

Create a one-of-a-kind gift basket with organic bath and body supplies or even organic baby supplies. Assemble in a hemp basket using a bamboo knit washcloth and a bath puff as filler.

So there you go,  some really cool quick  ideas for an at home spa.

I had the chance to make a really delicious dish last night, one that was really really good! Sometimes it can be a struggle finding recipes that my whole family enjoys and will eat all together at one time. Trial and error is something that I have come to realize when you have kids. They all have different palates and like to eat different ways, and when you have four small little ones like I do all of different ages. Ranging from 2 – 10 your bound to have picky eaters. However, I always cook to please them, and sometimes I like to please my self by making gourmet meals that are light, tasty and seems as if you have brought the restaurant right into your own home. I love seafood and pasta, that combination has always been my favorite .

So I decided to try out a new creamy seafood dish, that I have been eying for quite some time now, I said what the hell. Tonight's my night and if they don't like it than to bad. (just kidding)

The seafood dish is called The Alla Betsey Creation by Ree Drummond  whose sister came up with the dish for a girls night out sort of thing.  Ree's  Book is called The Pioneer Woman Cooks  – Recipes from an Accidental Country Girland features very mouth watering dishes. That are so easy to make and does not require a lot of effort. Even the novice cook can get this cookbook and begin cooking like a pro. Because the Pioneer Woman lays everything out in visual detail and side by side order telling you what to do step by step.  This is a great starter book for anyone wanting to learn how to cook and a great gift to give a new mom to be at a baby shower.  I have to used this book time and time again and have never been dissapointed yet.

ok, enough about the book.

The recipe that  I choose was Alla Betsey a seafood pasta combination that is to die for, I had no idea that when I would start to eat this pasta dish that it was going to be that good.

A total Shocker, but in a good way.

Here is a picture below of the dish when it was finally completed.

pasta dish

I decided that when I was making the dish I would not switch out the penne pasta for whole wheat pasta but use, Farfalle Pasta which is just as good and does not include all that nasty chemicals and gives a more authentic flavor.

The entire meal only consists of a couple of ingredients and produce you already have in your fridge.

  1. 1 pound of penne pasta
  2. 1 pound of large shrimp, however I used a pound and a half. ( I have a large family)
  3. 2 tablespoons of butter
  4. 2 tablespoons of olive oil
  5. 1 small onion, finely chopped
  6. 2 Garlic cloves chopped
  7. 1/2 cup of dry white wine, cooking white wine is what I used.
  8. one 14.5 ounce can of tomato sauce
  9. 1 cup of heavy cream, organic ( optional) maybe some regular milk for thinning
  10. 2 tablespoons of parsley
  11. 6 basil leaves chopped
  12. salt
  13. pepper

Clean the shrimp and devin, uncooked large shrimp, than in a small non-stick skillet add the 1 tablespoon of butter and the 1 tablespoon of olive oil. When  pan is hot add the shrimp stir and cook until pink. Remove the shrimp to a plate to cool and drain the juice out of the pan.  Chop  the shrimp  into bite size pieces. Next chop the onion and in the same skillet add the remaining butter and olive oil until melted. Add the onion and garlic and cook about 3 minutes until translucent.  Pour in the white wine and reduce until it is almost evaporated.  Pour in the tomato sauce simmer for about a minute, than add the cream on low. Mix well and reduce to simmer.  Finish by adding the shrimp to the pan, add the herbs salt and pepper to taste. Add the cooked pasta,  stir to mix well and fully coated and serve warm.

Remember to cook the pasta first before you do anything to al dente and sit aside while you do every thing else.

I love this dish and the recipes in the Pioneer Woman Cooks Cookbook!

For sure a keeper.

Enjoy!

In Defense of food – An Eater’s Manifesto Review

Sitting here next to my kids by the side of the pool, I thought it would be a great time to let you guys know about a great book that I  have been raving about. If you have read my last posts on how to make real food and how food can affect your mood.

You will see the importance of why I am writing this post.

In Defense of Food – A Eaters manifesto is a awesome book on how to eat real food, yet in a better way  explains that we should just plain out eat period!

“Eye Opening and appetite altering” – Audrey Van Buskirk, Portland Tribune

Michael Pollan has created a book that explains that we should not be afraid to eat, in fact that we should embrace food. And not be afraid of it as if it were some sort of calorie ridden enemy that could sabotage our weight loss goals.

The name of this book justify exactly what it is about!

In Defense of Food Michael Pollan starts out telling us about the history of food.

That food was about the pleasure and the enjoyment, family gatherings and the spiritual benefit. He explains that in the beginning it was not so complicated, people ate and ate for a reason. For a biological necessity and internal pleasure.

The Second part of the book goes into great detail about the rise of nutritionism, and how it came into play. How different nutrients were discovered and studied on how they  interrelated with each other.

However with all this rise of nutritionism much more was being created.

The food scientists came into play discovering that they could create and modify ingredients by altering the chemical make up of the food.  They purposed that they could take out and add back in what they thought suited the overall process.

Which gave the rise to processed foods.

The whole thing is really quite interesting, especially when he goes into detail about the mind washing of modern America. How big government has been able to convince  them to believe that everything they were already eating was not healthy for them.

But something out of box would do the trick.

Go Figure:)

So the rise of the food industrialization and a turning point  in which America would than plummet to the lows of obesity, heart disease, cancers, in-fertility, with a huge role of spectrum disorders in children to name a few.

Yes, everything we eat correlates to how we feel.

Michael Pollan wraps it up in the end by letting us know how we can get back to real food, by following simple steps. He shows us what to do, what we need to avoid and really its  pretty simple!

This book as in my opinion is one the most informative books out there to date on how we should govern our thoughts about how we view food. It was a delight to read.

And I am sure you will enjoy it too.

How to Eat Real Food: Part Two

This post may contain affiliate links. Please see my Disclosure for more Info.

Recently I discussed in part one  the importance of  how to eat real food. Now I would like to explain why I feel that grass fed meat and pastured animal products are better for you.

I have always believed that “you are what you eat” since what you eat can greatly affect your mind, your health and overall well-being. As in this video on how food can affect your mood. The speaker goes on to say that

Junk food equals junk moods.

I thought this was a powerful statement that really gets you to thinking!

Everything that we eat is made of nutrients, macro nutrients that are the building blocks of life for new cell growth. The human body is always in a constant state of Regeneration and this cannot happen effectively without proper nourishment.

 dining together

It is sort of like our skin which sheds all day long; when we bathe we are actually exfoliating our bodies sloughing off dead skin cells releasing the new ones to come to the top. The same thing happens inside the body with our cells. The old go away and new ones are formed.

With such a constant pace of cell regeneration, which helps to fight off disease it is best if we equip our bodies with best nourishment. Empty calories or substandard food will only ensure that our foundation for health and wellness is weak.

Eating food that is pretty much factory raised does have issues that come with them. Much of the animals today are raised in factory's that are meant to make them fat for slaughtering by having them eat empty calories.

If you have not had the chance yet to watch the film Food Incthan I suggest you do so. You can read my official review of it here since it goes into more detail in a video manner about the horrible conditions on how our food goes from factory to plate.

Many of the animals are fed genetically modified craps that has already been sprayed with pesticides that can harm their digestive systems. Cows are supposed to eat grass and roughage but instead they are fed grains and corn to make them fat. Sugars from the corn increase the fat content unnaturally and can cause disease. Chickens are shut in doors and kept from the greens and bugs outside (their natural habitat) in close quarters with really no exercise what so ever. But fed grains and soy once again to fatten them as quick as possible.

If you are what you eat, then what do we hope to become by eating animal products that come from factory farms?

Right.

real food today

This is a scary thought and it is one that paved the way for the rebirth of the grass fed and pastured foods movement. A lot of consumers are now looking for safer alternatives by seeking out beef from cows that are grass fed, and allowed to roam naturally with minimal pesticide interaction. They buy farm fresh eggs where the chickens are allowed to roam free and eat grass, seeds, bugs, fruit that is more natural to them.

Grass-fed meat is lean and has a fat content that more closely resembles chicken or wild game. This actually helps to improve your cholesterol levels instead of raise them. While it is low in the bad fats associated with high cholesterol, it is very high in the good fats, the omega-3 fatty acids. All of the nutrition from the pastures they graze translates into lean cuts of meat and delicious milk that are nutritionally superior and much healthier for your family.

Pastured eggs are said to have about 20 times more omega-3 fatty acids than their factory farmed counterparts. The moment you crack open a pastured egg you can tell from the dark orange yolk that you are eating something rich and full of nutrition. They also taste infinitely better than other eggs. Once you try them you will find you be hard pressed to ever go without again.

As the saying goes, we are truly what we eat!

What are your thoughts on the whole Real Food Movement?

As I’m sitting here eating this gluten free chocolate chip cookie, I decided it would be a really great time to let you know about a really cool book that I have been reading.organic_farming

The book is called In Defense of Food by Michael Pollan who is the author of the omnivore’s Dilemma, and may I add a New York Times bestseller.

I have had the book for quite some time now and never got around to finishing it until now and boy what an awesome book! Michael Pollan really delivers in this book. He gives some great insight into what Real Food is and how we can come to know  how to eat in a more conscious manner. Which is not only better for ourselves, but will greatly increase sustainability of the world we live in.

If you do not know exactly what real food is than you might want to take notes.

Just kidding:)

As the decades have passed mainly in the latter part of the 19th century we have been inundated by mass media and marketing claims that the food we are eating is really healthy.

I mean right, who would really have questions about food that is supposed to be good for us, I mean since most of the food we eat is sponsored and given kudos from some of the biggest health associations out there.

But as we all know not everything that always shines is  always gold.

Right.

I mean I may sound harsh but that is just the stark reality of the food that is out there.

So what really is a Traditional Food Diet (way of eating)?

And why have many chosen this choice?

Well first off traditional eating is mainly getting back to the roots of eating, the real core food of what true food is. It is pretty much cutting out all the junk, the processed crap and really eating yummy, healthy wholesome food.

Traditional food is how we used to eat about 50 to 100 years before we had all the commercialized way of eating.

Which is pretty much governed by the food scientists.

Yes there are food scientists that exist who’s job is to take and re-create new ways of making food. That has never existed on its own, but is taken from real food sources, stripped of all nutrient values and than enriched once again( bread) to try to make it healthy.

As more and more companies came into play so did the power and money. Big money was an issue and now not only were they telling us what was healthy for us. The food corporations started to really make us believe that many of staples that have existed for centurys was bad fur us.

Like butter…….

It was this marketing that made us believe that good old fashioned butter would make us fat and that fake butter in the form of chemical laden margarine was actually the better option.

mamie via

They started processing traditional favorites and using marketing tactics to make us believe that these new foods and products were healthier for us, but in reality the companies are taking healthy nourished food in its true form, and depleting it of it true potential all in effect to gain a buck.

They remove the healthiest parts, while adding chemical preservatives and flavorings to make it tasty.

Likewise during that time period when the food corporations were just getting started they had to find a way to make many believe that the lard, or grease from animal products would make them fat. Never mind the fact that fake oils like processed vegetable shortening is actually really what will make you fat.

Not to mention the fact that low fat and skim milk is not all that they claim it to be, in fact your body needs fat to survive. The brain is made up of fatty tissues and needs good fats to function at its maximum peak.

Good fats such as good oils like coconut oil, olive oil, and real animal fats.

Real fat foods that nature provides are almost always better and healthier for us than what can be made in a lab, where critical fat-soluble vitamins A, D, K2 are often lost or removed. While at the same time many of foods we eat today are packaged in plastic bags or tin cans with with BPA (Bisphenol A) liners that can leach toxic substances into our food.

That is why many today are going back to a more traditional way of eating, the real food way.

I am not saying you have to go all gung ho, and drastically change your life to eat the real food way.

What I am saying that every little bit helps. When you start to eliminate the artificial , processed , colorful , pre-packaged foods. And start shopping locally by going to the farmers market, natural health food stores and buying fresh produce you will have already started a new way a eating that is more healthy and delicious for yourself.

Clever marketing may have made us temporarily believe that scientists could engineer better foods but vast increase in degenerative diseases afflicting us over the past few decades has made many of us rethink this position. If food is to be our medicine than we need to give the foods we eat a vast deal more consideration and return to traditional foods.

Here are a list of resources that you should look into if you want to know more about eating real food and a traditional way of eating.
